
Irish boxer 28 year John Cooney has passed away following his fight against Nathan Howells last Saturday in Belfast.
He spent the last week in the ICU after undergoing emergency brain surgery for a intracranial hemorrhage.
The Irish boxer underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain after the bout at Ulster Hall but tragically did not recover, leaving fans and the sports community in a bit of shock. Known for his skill and charismatic presence in the ring, Cooney’s passing is another loss to the sport.
Cooney’s family expressed their profound grief and extended gratitude to the hospital staff for their dedicated care. A GoFundMe campaign was established to support his family, amassing £47,000 including a notable £20,000 contribution from champion Irish boxer Conor McGregor.

He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness.
