Swiss Village Destroyed by Landslide as Glacier Collapses
On May 28, 2025, A section of the Birch Glacier collapsed this Wednesday afternoon
The Swiss village of Blatten has been partially destroyed after a huge chunk of glacier crashed down into the valley.
Although the village had been evacuated some days ago because of fears the Birch glacier was disintegrating, one person has been reported missing, and many homes have been completely flattened.
90% of a 300 person village has been destroyed by a glacier collapse, and is now completely covered in debris one person has been reported missing, and many homes have been completely flattened. Luckily scientific advancements led to the town being warned and evacuated a week ago, but it’s just crazy to see something like this happen in mere seconds. Seems as though climate change is melting all the permafrost, so this is basically the new norm now.
To the people of Blatten and the entire Lötschental Valley, to every friend who has shared this lovely place with the world, It really breaks my heart to see the size of the catastrophy that 300 people lost everything there. we stand with you in this moment of sorrow. With all our heart, we are with you.
Nature mountains are powerful, amazing, but it can be dangerous, therefore we all should live in respect with it.
The situation remains unstable, with risks of further debris flows or floods, and no timeline for residents’ return, this event highlights the growing threat to alpine communities.
