Sushi restaurateurs in Tokyo say they have paid 207 m yen 1.3 million dollars for a bluefin tuna which is about the size and weight of a motorbike.
The sale is the second highest price ever paid at the annual New Year auction at Fish Market in the Tokyo Japanese capital, Hard to believe this one, such a waste of money.
Michelin-starred sushi restaurateurs the Onodera Group said they had paid 207 million on Sunday for the 276 kilogram 608 pound bluefin tuna, roughly the size and weight of a motorbike.
The first tuna is something meant to bring in good fortune, Onodera official Shinji Nagao told reporters after the auction. Our wish is that people will eat this and have a wonderful year.
It is the second highest price paid at the opening auction of the year in japon main fish market since comparable data started being collected in 1999.
The relatively high sums achieved at the traditional New Year’s auction are not primarily related to the quality of the fish. Rather, the whole thing is a clever PR campaign at the start of the new financial year, which the local media then reports on every year.
