Skype to shut down on the 5th of May 2025 due to unpopularity

Skype will finally shutdown on the 5th of May, 2025 after 22 years, due to unpopularity.

Microsoft teams has announced the permanent closure of Skype, effective May 5 2025, after 22 years of service. The decision reflects shifts in communication technology with Skype losing ground to competitors like Zoom and WhatsApp.

Skype was founded in 2003, The Luxembourg-based Skype is owned by an investor group led by Silver Lake and which includes eBay Inc, Joltid Limited and Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Andreessen Horowitz.

Microsoft’s decision to close Skype comes seven years after it released its Teams chat and group video calling application, whichoffered many of the same features as Skype.

Skype’s website says the service had an average of 124 million connected users per month in the second quarter of 2010, On 1 September 2009, it was announced that eBay was selling 65% of Skype to Silver Lake, Andreessen Horowitz, and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board for US$1.9 billion, valuing Skype at US$2.75 billion.
